Fall can bring the feeling of wanting to hibernate. Spending evenings curled up on the couch easily turn into a habit. It is easy to waste away weekends and evenings with T.V. and aimless wonderings on social media.

It is going to get darker sooner, cloudier, chilly. It can feel like a horrible change to heat, clear skies, and sunny days of summer. Here are 9 ways to take care of yourself this fall, making sure you have a good mood and are motivated to continue on with your goals.

1. Sleep More

Take time to listen to your body. During these dreary days many animals go into hibernation. We too seem to catch that bug which doesn’t leave us till spring. Know that it may be an uphill battle to fight off the need for some extra sleep. It is okay to go to bed early or sleep in.

2. Get More Light

Without the natural light from the sun coming through the windows, rooms can a dreary feel to them. Turn on lamps and light to waken yourself and help you focus on work. I find when I am working the more light I have, the more energized and focused I can feel. When I have less light and can see the dreariness outside its easy for me to bum around “relaxing.”

3. Indulge in the Treats of Fall, But Not Too Often

I am a huge fan of pumpkin spiced lattes in the fall. I know that buying one every day probably isn’t best for my wallet or waistline. So instead I will make most of my pumpkin spiced lattes at home, where I can regulate the sugar and everything else that goes into it. It makes it a lot easier to treat myself, enjoy the drink, and make it healthier. Think about what treats you can make healthier, so, indulging doesn’t cost you too much either your waistline or waller. Also, remember that a treat is not for every day. It should be enjoyed and savored. If it isn’t, you are probably having it to frequently.

4. Keep Working Out

It is easy to fall into a trap that since it is nasty outside you won’t leave for the gym, or do your workout outside. I think that excuse gets old quick. We have rain boots and jackets for a reason. Figure out ways to keep active, from home, taking classes, to doing it with friends. Planning how to tackle this in the fall will help you prevent winter weight and establish a healthy habit for winter.

5. Leave The House

It is simple, leave the house more often than you want to or think you should. A lot of the stir crazy, down mood, unmotivated, stuck attitude come from being at home and in your head for too long. The world provides perspective, fun, friends and motivation.

6. Make Plans

This is similar to leaving the house but doens’t mean it has to be out of the house. Have something to look forward to. A lot of joy comes from looking forward to an activity, event, vacation, or get together with a friends. So make plans so you can have something to look forward to. Whether you are meeting up for Oktoberfest, making dinner with a friend, or planning to watch your favorite movie with your favorite glass of wine, plan for it.

When life slows down we often think we will have plenty of time for all those side projects that have been stalling. More times doesn’t always equal more productivity. Make reasonable goals, with reasonable times to work on it. Don’t toss a broad goal for the weekend, or you will try accomplishing something amorphous. It will drain you of motivation.

Have rewards for your progress. Make those rewards centered around what is available in this season, fall. Maybe it is going to a winery, treating yourself to a new sweater, or getting a Starbucks PSL. Enjoy what this time of year can offer you.

3. Think About A Fall Challenge

A great focus for fall is a challenge that only happens during this time of year. There are plenty of physical competitions to help push you to keep working out. There are Halloween 5ks and 10ks. Train for a race where everyone dresses up for the run.

There are creative challenges as well. There is a writing challenge called NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November. The challenge takes place in November and you write a 50,000 word novel with thousands of other people around the world. There are plenty of challenges like this through the fall.
