I moved into my first apartment in New York with my sister. We are still in living in that same apartment  today. I wasn't making as much money as my sister at the time and chose to have the smaller bedroom of the two in order to pay less rent. This room looked more like a cubby office for the master bedroom, my sister took. I knew that I was going to have to be creative for this small space in order to optimize placement of furniture.

Since I live in New York City, I knew I needed a haven away from it all. A space where I could decompress front he hustle and bustle. A place that is mine. It is important to know you have a safe place to be at peace and be comfortable.  In those places of comfort and peace we often are able to take off the masks we put on for people and dig deep into our souls exploring ourselves.

A couple of questions I asked myself before buying any furniture was what I wanted to do in my room and how did I want to feel about it. I knew I wanted to able to study for the bar, but also have peace and a place of solace. I set up a space that allowed for productivity and rejuvenation.

Here are some things to think about when making your room a sanctuary:

EMPTY SPACE

How much empty space do you have? Do you need more or want more? Think about rearranging furniture, and throwing/ giving away stuff. What is used and not used? What is the purpose of the having all your winter boots out during the summer? Or a bookshelf full of books you have no interest in reading? What about the extra chair that no one can sit in because it is always covered with clothes? Go through your closet and shoes. Lighten the load. It can be freeing and refreshing to let go of stuff that you are no longer using or emotionally attached to.

SMELLS

Does your room smell nice or like the trash or dirty laundry pile? Does your roommates smelly cooking leak into your room to permentantly destroy whatever serenity you create? Think about opening a window, fabreeze, candles, or heated oils that can help take away bad orders but also add odors that comfort and relax you.  If workout clothes or work clothes smell try air drying them with an open window, fan, or fabreeze. Don't let smell be a deterrent for not owning your space and finding peace there.

LIGHT & COLORS

Some of us enjoy darkness, to hide away, focus and truely feel alone. Others enjoy the light seeing everything around them and what they are doing. I prefer the light on most days. In fact, I have no blinds or shades in my room because I love the sun. I also have two lamps and a ceiling light. Some might find it a bit excessive but, I love it. What's your preference, do you need more lamps or better shades, to draw you back into your room? Do you enjoy seeing what's in your room?

The second part of this is color and designs. Does color add to your peace or draw you in so you will use your space? A painted wall, colorful sheets, or a bright rug can all add the splash of color that can put a smile on your face when you look at it. Personally I enjoy the random pop of color, but don't need it to find serenity to come be in my space. Would it add to your space?

SOUND

When I usually get home it it quiet in my apartment. I usually can hear the hustle of New York outside, though. I enjoy the noise at time but one too many babies crying usually leads to stress or anxiety. So I try to have music going to block out some of the outside noise and put me in a place of peace. Do you need some type of sound or do you need silence? Should music play in the background, or on headphones? Do you need ear plugs to block out the screaming neighbors? Or is the rhythmic sound of a fan enough to smooth you? What we listen to has the power the affect our moods and change our thoughts. So if you need uplifting music or a comedy show to laugh a bit and relax, prepare that for yourself and your space.

TOUCH

This one might seem a bit far fetched for some, but you want to create a place where you can easily be at peace so its important to actually think of every sense. When I get home I take off my shoes and put on my house slippers. I don't like walking on the wood floors without some cushion. Some of us like being able to squish our toes through a plush rug. Maybe you like to sit on a nice hard chair or a plush bean bag. What do you want to feel beneath your feet, or butt? Do you need a pillow on your chair or sit on a yoga mat on the floor? Physical comfort is important when you are making your space your own.

EATING/ TASTING

I don't have food in my room, but, I do have mints and gum which can awaken my senses. Sometimes its nice to awaken your mouth or clear it out from other tastes that are distracting.  It can be a helpful peaceful addition to help the whole space come together.

Everyone's place will be different and reflect their needs for peace and comfort.  What do you need in your space? How does your space look?
