How To Find Your Purpose (Part 2): Who Do You Want to Be

This is the second part in a series on finding purpose. In the first part I discussed the importance of knowing yourself. If you are having difficulty finding purpose, I suggest starting with this post, then move to this one. 

Now, you hopefully can articulate who you are, and what brings your joy. You still may not know what your purpose, path, or direction in life is but that is okay. The more you become clear on who you are and who you want to be, you will see what paths will have take you there.  

This second part I will help you discover who your future self will be. When you know who your future self is supposed to be you will have to learn and change to create that future self, which will set you on a path and give you direction.  

These questions are to help you discover who you want your future self to be. You will learn and grow into the future self you want to be, with work and specific intentions. This post has more action steps than the first part. So, dive in to start creating a life you want. 

Describe your Future Self 

Can you describe who you want to be? 

Picture yourself in 10 years, 30 years, or at the end of this year. Who would you like to have become? What do you see when you picture that future self? Are they well dressed, confident, capable, physically strong, happy, at peace, in love, excited about life? 

Has your future self experienced life as you would want? Traveled? Ate different place? Interacted with many different types of people? What do you want to have done by the age of 30, 60, or even when you die?

Now, just because you don’t know what profession or career is doesn’t mean you haven’t thought about what you want out of life. So describe that future self, experiences and actions.  Who are you excited to become? 

List 3 words that describe your future self. Write those words down, attach them to a daily alarm. 

I got this nifty idea from Brendon Burchard in the High Performance Habits, if you want more details on that book read my book review. This exercise is something that is often done for New Years. You pick a word that you want to live by and embrace for the year. Here, you will pick 3 words that describe your future self. 

Think about the important traits that you want to embody, love, passion, strength, vulnerability, self-discipline, kindness, persistence, dedication, grit or many others. Choose three.  

Now set an alarm for three times a day for the words to pop up on your cell phone and remind you of who you are trying to become. I have my alarms set for 7 am, 11 am, and 5 pm. Yours may be set at any time. 

The goal of this exercise is to help remind you through out the day of who you are wanting to become. This could change how you interact with co-workers, take on challenges, or talk to yourself. With more conscientious effort you will slowly start adapting the traits of your future self. 

Describe how you will interact with others

Think about your past interactions with your coworkers, friends, spouse, strangers, even mail man or barista. How did you behave and what sort of energy did you bring to each interaction? How do you want those intereactions to be handled in the future? How do you want to be with those loved ones in the future?  

Think about what tone you use, what energy do you want to create? How are you being a better listener? Are you generating positive emotions with others? Are you being a good role model? How will you provide what the other person will need?

Thinking about how have interacted with others gives you a reference for what you did and did not like about yourself in those situations. Now when you apply how your future self would act in those situations you are able to see the changes that are necessary for each situation. 

How do you want to be treated? Are you emitting those same attributes to each person you talk to? 

How do you want others to treat you? Are you feeling that you are not receiving it or want more of it? Is it respect, to be heard, trusted, to be acknowledged or accepted? 

You have a choice in how you act. Every situation is an opportunity to try again and work on skills to get you closer to your future ideal self. Make sure you are treating others how you would like to be treated. 

By pushing yourself to for example listen better you will see that you may avoid more conflict, and receive some great input. Others may be more ready to listen to what you say after you have heard them out. Most people want to be treated the same, respected, heard, and acknowledged.  

Choose 1-5 words of how you want to be remembered by people. Now intentionally seek to fulfill that in each situation 

To start choose 5 people that you intersect with often. Now describe using single words, just three words, how you want those people to remember you. In 10 years if that person were how what they thought of you, what do you want them to say? Reliable, honest, caring, strong, passionate, bold, aggressive, or intelligent.

Each person in your life you will want to have a different impact on. People at home you will want to be seen as probably reliable, caring, and honest. While work people you may want to be seen as intelligent, passionate and aggressive. Each person you will want to impact differently and thats okay. 

When you think about how you want these people to remember you are in turn reflecting how you can be consistent in way that represent those words. So, what does that mean for your future self, what will you have to do in order to embody those words? Will you have to implement some new habits so that you can embody caring attributes or change your work schedule so that you can be more reliable at home? 

What skills will you develop 

Your future self is going to have more skills, be more proficient, elegant, influential and so much more. So, you know you want to become these things in the future, how will you develop them. Skills take time and energy specifically put into them to be mastered. 

What skills will you need to improve on in order to be able to become that future you? What skills are necessary to have more fruitful relationships? Or skills needed for hobbies or work that you see your future self involved in?

As you figure out what books you will read or courses you will take make a curriculum for yourself. How will you challenge and push yourself? How will you teach yourself?

How will you serve

As you gain clarity on the direction your life will take you will see how you can best serve others and contribute to the world. Not every act of service will be monumental or even a huge sacrifice to yourself.  

But, in the end how we serve others will drive you to continually do better. So, think about your future self and how you serve. What does it look like? You may still be foggy on the details, but you do see that you bring smiles, build confidence, or even just acknowledge and hear someone who feels that they are not seen. 

What do you see your future self doing to serve others? Is it purposeful daily acts of kindness, or providing clean drinking water to those who don’t have it? No act in service of others is too small.

Now reimagine your future self

So, we have covered a lot. There are many diminisions to yourself. So who do you see in the future? Who will you become? Who do you want to become? Write again who you want to be in the future.
