When summer begins to wind down, with shorter days, cooler temperatures and cloudy skies, we know fall is here. Fall can provide an opportunity for lots of fun. But, fall can also bring about a sadness and an unmotivated mind.

The weather turns poor and we are now caught inside more than we would like. It can get a bit depressing and difficult to change the dreary mood and lack of motivation that starts to take place.

There are plenty of fun activities to look forward to in the fall, but in order to get your mood uplifted and motivation turned around, start with some of these ideas.

What To Do In Fall If You Love the Sun and Outdoors

It can feel like it happens so quickly, the change in weather. You go from cookouts, beach trips, and walks outside just because its nice, to needing a jacket and wondering where the sun has gone. The lack of sun and good weather can make us feel like spending all of fall and winter in doors.

I felt the dreary chill in the air and thought “nooo,” I am not done with the sun yet. The sun and being outdoors really effect my mood. I have become more and more aware as the years and seasons go by how important the sun is. So What do we do in the fall?

Avoid Your Fall Blue By Enjoying the Fall Weather Outside

We can get stuck in a trap staying inside waiting for the sun to show itself. Before you know it, a month has passed and you have spent every weekend inside, not doing much, just bumming around waiting. Waiting for a slight change in the weather that isn’t going to happen until spring.

Enjoy the wind, the chilly air, and even the light drizzle. Breath fresh air, see nature and take note of the world around you. Go for a walk and take some time for yourself.

Don’t get stuck inside and in your head. It will be an even longer winter if you start that habit now. It can be uncomfortable, but dress how you need to and get out there. This can shock you out of your bad mindset and make you more present to all the changes of fall.

Keep Working Out Even Though It Started to Get Cold

I love running outside. It makes me feel free and alive, especially compared to running on a treadmill inside. Don’t let poor weather be the reason you stop working out.

If you want to keep up your workouts outside get the proper clothing and keep doing it! You will be so happy you did, and I will be so happy you did! It can take a lot of self-discipline to get out there and do it, but you can do it.

Go to the gym to work out when working out outside has zero appeal. Some times the short walk to the gym or car when its cold or raining is the deterrent for leaving. Wear rain boots and a coat if you need to. That excuse doesn’t fool anyone.

Keep moving your body even at home to bring a better mood about. Dreary skies can be fun once and a while, but now they are here to stay. Make yourself move to get yourself in a better mood.

Mood Changers in the Fall

For some of you the weather doesn’t change your mood but being around everyone else who is a bit down, does. I understand this all to well, when I was in college I didn’t mind the change in the weather. I love it. I did mind the change in everyone else. Everyone began to get ready to hunker themselves down for the winter.

Here are a couple of reminders to help you balance your life in the fall.

It is common to want to sleep more in the fall and winter. Our bodies feel like we want to hibernate. Plus with the sun never showing, the day can feel like dusk. Go ahead and listen to your body when it is tired. Sleep an extra 15 minutes. Go to bed earlier and wake up later. It is completely natural and okay to slow down.

Pushing yourself through the fall and winter will only be an uphill battle. Its not necessary. If your body is tired, sleep.

For those of you who ton’t feel the extra pull to sleep more, rock on and do you. Definitely seek out others who are similarly situated, it will be easier to meet up early in the mornings or late at night without worrying about bailers who sleep in or get to bed early.

Food

It is sweets and fatty dishes season. Some of my favorite activities during this time of the year are cooking and baking.

As someone who feels the negative effects of too much sugar and indulgence, I can definitely agree that the fall can be the start of a difficult season. Too much indulgence can negatively affect my mood and motivation. Be aware of when you decide to indulge and how often. It can be a slippery slope if you don’t understand your bodies needs and how it reacts to food.

The biggest differences are seen when you start to feed your body with healthy clean food versus the easy indulgence. When I feel like I need a reset, I start my days with a healthy breakfast. There is no pressure to eat clean the rest of the day, but starting off with a good meal makes me aware of the benefits from that food, versus others.

This is just one way to check in with your body and to try a small change for a week. Just remember that you start to feel a sour mood this fall, check in with what you are eating.

Getting Social in the Fall

When the weather gets dreary and nasty we often seclude ourselves away. We are more lethargic and don’t want to venture out more than we have to. Often times friend dates get cancelled or pushed back till they are forgotten.

We all need social time, some of us more than others. Without it life can get very dreary and lonely. So, leave the house to see friends and family. Trust me I get it, there is a magnet between your butt and the couch, but really, you need social contact.

You can always invite friends over, if they come and leave their comfy space for you, thats great! But make sure you meet your friends in their comfy space as well. When weather is a real issue set up skype dates! It could be with a friend who lives in another state or a few blocks away. Getting the human contact you need can make all the difference in remembering that you are not alone this season.

How to Still Meet Goals in the Fall and Avoid Motivation Depletion

Bad weather can be a huge drag. At first it can feel good to have to be inside to work on your goals. But after a while it can just be boring. It can also be the thing that prevents you from making progress on your goals.

Create a Plan for Your Goals This Fall

It might have been easy to work on your goals over the summer because your time was limited. You went out more frequently and so had less time to get distracted or procrastinate. Now you may feel like you have way to much time, which can be overwhelming.

Make sure that you plan specific time for your goals similar to the summer. Don’t say that you have all weekend to work on your writing project, thats too much time. Make sure you block off certain time then be done with it.

Leave the House to Smash Your Goals this Fall

Getting out of the house to work on goals can get you off the couch, and out of a couch potato mindset. Spend time elsewhere being productive, so you can come home to sit on the couch. Being productive will boost your mood and make working on your goals a little more enticing this fall.
