You have a big choice to make. It could be from choosing a school, to spending money on a vacation. These types of choices will constantly be popping up in life. So you handle them as any millennial would.
We research. We write pro con lists. We gather more information and talk to people. Then we look at all the information we have gathered and try to pick the “right” choice. Like this is a test that we are trying to pass.
That’s when it is hits! Overwhelm. Dread. Fear of making the “wrong” choice. It is paralyzing. Many of you will not choose rather than make the “wrong” choice! Thats how strong the fear of making the wrong step can be.
Guess what. It is okay. You are not alone in your struggle and we all know that you don’t want to go down the wrong path. Let’s talk about how to get out of the fear paralysis and make a choice.
Let’s Take a Deep Breathe and Relieve the Stress
Seriously, I want you to unwind a bit to make sure that you are in a better place to make this decision. For the next 5 minutes you are going to take deep breathes. Deep inhales that last for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds and exhale for 5 seconds.
The physiology of your body will change. You will be able to stop thinking you are under attack at this moment, and relax to be in a better state of mind to make this decision.
Have You Covered the Basics
I want you to check in with yourself and make sure that you have eaten regularly today. You need food to keep your brain working. It needs fuel to go through the loads of information you have collected.
Also, you will only frustrate yourself reviewing information if you do it when you are hungry or tired. If you need to take a nap before you make this choice, do it. If you need to go work out, do it.
Check in with your needs and make sure that you are in a good place to make this choice. You are going to need your whole being in a good place, to walk out of fear and make the best choice for you.
Choice Making Time
Okay, you will have different a choice to make. So, I can’t offer you my advice specifically on your choices. But, what I can offer are some steps to walk through to help eliminate the large amount of information you are dealing with.
First, make sure you have a list of musts or won’ts. Meaning a list that says exactly what you will pay, where you want to be, and what you want to do. Be specific. Make a list of things you do NOT want, these things you will not compromise.
Go through your choices and eliminate based on these lists. The point is to be the happiest with your choice, so eliminate choices that have things you don’t want to compromise in that choice.
Hopefully this will eliminate your list considerably. From here look at your pricing limits. Most things cost, so make sure that you know the line you are not willing to cross when it comes to money. Eliminate choices that don’t meet the financial requirements.
Now, I don’t want to keep telling you how to eliminate your choices. Because some of you may have 15 choices after all this elimination. You may have 15 solid choices.
So the next step is eliminating fear.
Get Rid of the Paralyzing Fear That Comes With Thinking You Will Make The Wrong Choice
I know that it can be challenging to make the choice of where to go to school, what program to choose, or what job to launch your amazing career. You think this will be the choice that changes your life. It won’t. Life doesn’t happen that way.
One choice rarely makes that type of impact, least of all the school you go to, jobs you take or relationships you take to the next level. There are thousands of choices that are made during those experiences that really makes the impact. Its the consistent choices, to wake up early to study and not stay out late that makes your high GPA happen, and jobs offers roll in.
Trust me consistent hard work makes things happen. So, fear is stopping you from moving forward. Fear of failing. Fear of not being good enough. Fear messing up your future plans.
Guess what?! You will fail. You will mess up. You will probably not end up anywhere where you thought you would. Your 20s aren’t everything. People, don't really have their life “together” till their 30s and 40s.
So, I want you to get comfortable with knowing that you are human. A flawed, beautiful human being! What ever choice you make you will make it the best choice or the worst choice, because there will be a million and one choice after, to confirm if it was the wrong choice or right choice.
Make the Choice and Stick With It
This part is hard. Taking time to get rid yourself of your fear might take days and you still may be a little unsure of yourself. You have put so much pressure on yourself up to this point. Your mind is wired to “not mess this up.” But, you will make a choice
You need to center yourself and get everyone else’s opinion out of your head. I want you to pose the question to yourself what do I want.
Then choose. Choose whatever your gut, first thought goes to. Regardless the cost, what your mother says, or your significant other’s opinion. You choose for you! You will have a million choices after to show yourself you made the right choice.
Know that choices are hard. I get it. But stick with that choice and do let overwhelm, worry, fear, regret slip in to cause to you not follow through.
