When you hear natural remedies, what do you think of? Do you think of herbs and teas, essential oils, or maybe yoga and acupuncture? Natural remedies could be all these things, they are considered alternative methods to conventional medicine. I like to consider natural remedies as healing methods that come from the earth, or how you use and move the body to heal yourself. 

Using Natural Remedies 

I use natural remedies in addition to conventional medicine. Natural remedies are from a natural source and have not be altered or contain additional chemical additives. I think of natural remedies as a go to for small issues and a additional supplement with bigger issues.

If I am having difficulty sleeping, I don’t rush to the doctor. Bit I may use lavender essential oil in a diffuser and drink a cup of chamomile tea to help me get to relax and sleep better. 

The same goes for having a more stressful period of life. I may use a specific essential oil, make sure I am working out, and meditate or journal more frequently. I have made the choice to try different tactics to solve my minor discomforts at home before going to the doctor for a prescription. 

I do believe that if you do want treat more serious ailments, or problems that don’t resolve themselves quickly with natural remedies, to talk to your doctor and get a diagnosis. Do this before you start treating yourself, even if you think you just have a cold. Also make sure you are using reliable sources to treat yourself and always know there are herbalists, aromatherapists, and others out there who can assist you.

1. Essential Oils

Essential oils are the nutrient rich oil pulled from plants and used on the skin or by inhalation to treat different symptoms. If you are new to essential oils check out this blog post to get knowledge of the basics. 

Essential oils have many healing properties and can be used in body care products to cleaning products. 

If you are wanting to start with essential oils, I suggest starting with two to five oils. Learn about them, how, when and where to use them. Each essential oil has multiple uses. 2. Herbs

Another natural remedy that ties closely to essential oils is herbs. This is basically a dried form of essential oils, the oils are in the dried herbs. Pretty cool when you think about it. People have been using herbs since the beginning of time to treat ailments. 

This is one of the oldest ways to treat yourself. I got into herbs after buying the Herbs & Essential Oils Super Bundle. I learned a lot form The Herberarium, which I gained access to from the bundle. The monographs tell a lot about individual herbs, explaining the scope of possible uses in treatment.

Herbs have a similar far reaching capabilities as essential oils. I am currently researching herbs and creating my own Materia Media as my knowledge grows. Just like with essential oils, I suggest starting with two to five herbs you learn about and investigate. If you want to start, think  about using easily accessible herbs like cinnamon, rosemary, and thyme.

3. Healthy, Organic Food 

Certain foods have amazing benefits when consumed with the intent to treat an ailment. I will briefly cover some foods that fall in this category. This excludes herbs because we just covered that group. Food remedies include garlic, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar and honey. 

Those foods may sound like the items your grandmother would suggest you take, or use when you were sick. There is a reason for that, they work and are a natural remedy that is easily accessible and doesn’t require a doctor’s visit to get it. 

Research and learn about different foods and their therapeutic properties one by one. Remember to be smart about what you treat at home without first going to a doctor for a diagnosis. 

4. Supplements 

My knowledge on supplements is limited. I have used them in the past to help with sleep and stress. When you learn more about the minerals, vitamins, amino acids you can help your body with a simple pill.

I went to the doctor for a yearly check up, a couple of years ago. I was extra tired and everything was feeling the worse for it. I wanted to use all my free time napping. It was January and so the dead of winter, which made me think it could be depression or the lethargy of winter. 

When I got my blood work back I received the news that my vitamin D levels were incredibly low. I was prescribed large capsules of vitamin D to take over the next few weeks. That changed everything! It was a simple thing that my body was so depleted of and was effecting everything. Amazing!

I suggest getting blood work done to know your levels and what minerals and vitamins are easily consumed in your area. That way planning supplements can be specifically geared to your bodies needs and not what you think it needs. 

So, there are four areas of natural remedies. I believe each can make a huge difference in your life. I also believe that when you include your doctors in the conversation you will have better results.
